What you need to know

Many homeowners don't realize that their heating and cooling systems need to be serviced regularly. If you use your furnace or air conditioner six months out of the year, it's likely that it needs some TLC. Your system is built to run for an extended period of time, but sometimes that means it needs some maintenance so it can continue to run smoothly and efficiently. When it's time to have your heating and cooling systems serviced, you want to make sure that your HVAC contractor has the experience and knowledge to do a great job. A good HVAC company will understand how your system works and how to service it correctly.

Whenever you have an issue with your heating or cooling system, you may be wondering if it's a repair or replacement that you need. Here are a few things to consider: Is the problem something simple, like replacing a filter? Or is it something more complex, like replacing the entire system? If your repair costs exceed 10% of the purchase price of your system, many experts recommend replacing your system instead.

In the simplest terms, air conditioning is the process of removing heat from a space or object. This is typically done by running a fluid (typically water), through a system that compresses and expands the fluid and then heats and cools it to remove heat. Refrigeration on the other hand is a process that makes use of a vapor cycle. This means that the cooling agent (the refrigerant) changes from a liquid to a gas in order to remove heat.

Regular maintenance is one of the best things you can do to make sure your heating and air conditioning systems are working properly. Heating and cooling equipment that isn't maintained can cost you more in the long run and possibly result in much more serious issues down the road such as inefficient operation, higher energy bills, safety concerns and damage to your home.

The easiest way to save energy is to reduce the consumption of heating and cooling systems. If you know your home's average annual temperature, you can adjust your thermostat settings accordingly. For instance, if your home's average temperature is 72ºF, you would set the thermostat to 70ºF in the winter and 78ºF in the summer. You will find that your heating and cooling system will still reach the desired temperature but will use less energy.
